Growing Demand for AAC Blocks & Dry Mix Products
The population of India currently accounts for a little less than 18% of the world’s population. By 2025, it is believed that India will overtake China and be the most populous country in the world. As the population grows, the need for houses, hospitals, schools, commercial buildings, etc. will also grow. Thus, it isn’t surprising to note that India’s construction industry is set to grow at a very fast rate. It is estimated that by 2025, it will reach the size of 1 trillion USD. With the growing demands on the construction industry in mind, the leaders of this field have begun to recognize the value of progressive and green construction materials like AAC blocks and dry mix products. Let us take a look at what they are and why they are gaining popularity.
What are the AAC blocks?
Also known as Autoclaved Aerated Concrete blocks, AAC blocks are lightweight, durable, robust and a more eco-friendly and smarter option than traditional clay bricks. While the production of clay bricks has a harmful impact on the alluvial soil layer, AAC blocks are manufactured with recycled fly-ash, which is an industrial waste. These innovative blocks are versatile as they can be customized just as you wish. Despite their lightweight nature, AAC blocks have a high load-bearing capacity and can ensure cost-effective construction. These blocks have other advantages too, as they are resistant to fire, earthquakes, pests, and insulated against noise and heat. The energy consumed while manufacturing AAC blocks is significantly lesser than the energy consumed while producing clay bricks.
Why are AAC blocks being used widely?
The biggest reason why AAC blocks are being extensively used in residential and commercial projects is that they keep the project costs low and speed up the construction process. AAC blocks are more economical than clay bricks as they lead to less dead load, and thereby reduce the need for more concrete and steel to make the foundation sound. Also, since AAC blocks are larger than clay bricks, the number of joints is lesser and hence, less cement mortar is required. Moreover, you need less labor to lay down AAC blocks, which saves cost. Modern homeowners are leaning towards building materials that can make the interiors weatherproof and keep noise pollution at bay. And AAC blocks provide all of that at a very reasonable price. Termites and mold are also discouraged by these blocks, and they offer protection against natural calamities like fires and earthquakes.
Why is dry mix mortar gaining popularity?
Mortar is an essential element of the construction industry. This is used for masonry, plastering, flooring, and finishing. Traditionally, the mortar was made by mixing materials like cement and sand with water. The proportion of sand, cement, and water determines the strength of the mortar. Since this mixture is usually mixed onsite by construction workers, it is hard to maintain the same proportions for all the mortar used in a building. Thus, quality control is a major issue.
Dry mortar mix is used in the same way as traditional mortar mixes. However, no onsite mixing of materials is required other than the addition of water. Thus, it is easy to use and waste is minimized. This mortar is also stronger and more durable as compared to traditional mortar mixes since it contains additional polymers.
Apart from mortar, dry mix products can include adhesives, wall putty, plasters. They are easy to apply while laying tiles or joining blocks, or while sealing holes and cracks, or while plastering walls to achieve a smooth finish. Using such dry mix products doesn’t require special skills and they don’t consume a lot of time.
